A Beginners’ Guide to Golf

April 29th, 2007 by Olaf Bound.s

Olaf was recently asked a question and would like to share this view with all my viewers out there. Why did you pick up golf? I couldn’t actually answer the question because as far as I can remember, I recalled a certain person by the name of Jack Nicklaus. I watched one of his instructional video and was instantly hooked. But it comes to no surprise that a lot of my friends are eager to take up the sport but have no idea where to start. So, the question is not why we would like to pick up golf but HOW do we start to play this game called “GOLF”?

First, let’s define the game of Golf beyond the rules and etiquette. Golf is a game where it is unique in a sense you play against yourself and not against your opponent. You are the only person responsible for the shot you choose to play!

With that out of the way, let’s start with the first things first, HOW DO YOU START TO GOLF?

  1. Try it out first, go to a driving range. Yes, this is the place where you see a number of people taking a stick (it’s call a club) and hitting balls of the turf and in most cases nowadays, a mat.
  2. Borrow a friends club (preferably a 7-iron) and try to hit it.
  3. If unsuccessful at first, try and try again.
  4. Until you are able to hit your first shot and I do mean hit a shot, the feeling is quite exquisite!
  5. Then, if you develop an interest in hitting some more, you’re hooked and you start reading more of this blog and other interesting golf blogs or sites.

Now let’s see what equipment you would need in order to start playing this game more seriously:

  • A T-shirt, a pair of pants, a pair of socks, a pair of gloves and a pair of sneakers or trainers (your choice).
  • Unless you are a very determined person (or bloody rich) and want to start of straight away by buying the latest equipment, I suggest borrowing the golf pros set or getting a set of used clubs. We’ll dwell later into the subject of which types of clubs you should choose from in detail in the upcoming post.
  • Next, choose a golf professional attached to the driving range that you feel comfortable with and ask for the number of lessons you would need and off we go.

Certain things to avoid when starting to play golf:

  1. Absolutely, DO NOT GO STRAIGHT INTO THE GOLF COURSE!
  2. Second, DO NOT ASK YOUR FRIEND TO BE YOUR GOLF PRO! Even if he is a single handicapper!
  3. Third, DO NOT PRACTICE YOUR SWING OR HITTING A BALL IN THE LIVING ROOM OR ANYWHERE 2 miles within your house perimeters!
  4. Do not start buying everything a golfer needs like golf shoes, balls and the latest drivers. Although if you can afford it, who am I to say what’s right for you!

Try and find a couple of friends to take up the game with you. It will make the sessions more enjoyable! Also if you can get more friends to start with you, you have the option of asking for group lessons from the golf pro and enjoy a bit of discount. If you can’t get a friend to join you, don’t be dispirited. There will be many golfers to join you on the golf course once your golf pro deems you fit to play on the course!

In the upcoming post, Golfnick will show you the types of golf gloves available and the types of equipment that may suit you. Stay tuned…..
