A beginners path to the green
June 28th, 2007 by Olaf Bound.sIt always surprises me how a rare chance to give a few tips to a beginner can actually help them. Many weeks ago, a few blogger friends started to take up the game. Of course, knowing that I am not a qualified coach of any kind. I brought them to the range and see how much they could actually absorb from my tips that I learned from instructional DVDs and CDs. However, I can proudly say that they are all aces in my book. I believe that Han, Wingz and Kenny will all be ready for their first test of fire in two months. BUT I do also like to re-iterate that they would do much better under the guidance of a qualified professional; but the choice is up to them.
As much as I think I could help them, I can only guess how far they can progress further with my guidance and grandmaster Choo. But here are our reviews of them this week.
Han
Basically, you have a great natural swing. The tendency however is that you like to lift your body upon completion of your back swing. Work on actually swinging in front of the mirror and you will notice why the inconsistency still appear. Let’s do a video next week and we’ll work on from there.
Wingz
We have practically rebuilt your posture and grip. Your swing pattern looks great and your thinking that your swing is too mechanical has been reborn. The only thing lacking is the plane of your swing which is too upright. That’s the reason why you can swing well with a 9 iron and not progress further. Also the collapse of your left arm before the 9 o’clock position is too unreliable and is the basis of your inconsistency to hit the ball straight.
Kenny
I believe you have all the makings of a good swing. Your posture and grip is great. However you tend to take the club too much on the inside on your backswing. Hence the re-loop back to give you an in-to-out swing. Also on the next lesson, we will have to address the weight transfer to give you more distance before we move onto the longer clubs.
Dale and CK
I hope to spend more time to work with you guys. Hope to see you this Saturday!
As for Olaf, you’re still hopeless. Let’s hope grandmaster can spare a few minutes with you to help you swing.
Until the next round, Good Golf and Have Fun!!!!
