Best golf courses in Asia

April 11th, 2007 by Olaf Bound.s

Olaf just read a post in the Asian Golf Monthly. And it reads:

THAILAND – 1st CHOICE ASIAN DESTINATION FOR GOLFERS

  • Best Golf Destination in Asia – Thailand
  • Best Clubhouse in Asia – Thai Country Club
  • Best New Course in Asia – Amata Spring Country Club

Being a Malaysian golfer and golfed in Thailand, I am not at all surprised that Thailand has been voted tops. But what about Malaysian Golf Courses. What I can say is Malaysian courses are designed and maintained at a level I believe, is on par or even sometimes better than the ones we find in Thailand. But why is everyone voting in Thailand. Here are some of the reason why:

  1. Malaysian courses are not as highly maintained as those in Thailand.
  2. Poor golf ettiquttes by Malaysian golfers.
  3. The lure of good caddies (namely cheap, well informed, young and pretty).
  4. Service attitudes.
  5. Poor registering methods (play when ready as opposed to booking times).

I supposed being a Malaysian and this year being Visit Malaysia Year, I would have thought the golf courses here will buck up but sigh!…. Lets hope that we can buck up and show why Malaysian being a neighbor to Thailand and sharing a similar weather and environment can at least give them a good fight! But anyway, Thailand golf courses, well done!

  • Yup, i would agree with you that Thailand Courses are better maintained and more to offer. But it is not that cheap to golf in Thailand. I just played 1 round at the Lakewood Country Club Bangkok. It costs closed to RM200 per pax excluding caddy.

  • Sam-You couldn’t be more right! But remember if you compare the service attitudes, you can see why Malaysian courses have been out voted.

  • Service attitudes at Thai Golf Courses which I have played before are definitely better than Malaysian courses. We lost of to the Thai in service attitudes in many other areas, not just golf. :)
